A decentralized, public, off-grid communication network based on radio mesh technology. Join the pilot project and help expand the network.
About the Project
The MeshOffGrid.Net project aims to create an alternative communication network that works independently of the traditional internet.
A mesh network is a topology where each node not only uses the network, but also acts as a repeater, extending the total range. This allows for the creation of a resilient and self-organizing communication mesh.
Off-grid networks operate without relying on conventional internet or centralized infrastructure. This ensures communication even in disaster situations, access blocks or in remote locations.
We started with 5 strategically positioned nodes in Florianópolis, allowing initial coverage in key areas of the city. Each new node installed expands the reach and capacity of the network. We are using the Meshtastic.org project to implement this network because it is widely used worldwide and provides extensive documentation for enthusiasts of this technology.
Understand the technical principles that enable decentralized communication on our network.
Unlike traditional networks with central points of failure, in a mesh network each node connects to multiple other nodes, creating redundant routes for communication. If one node fails or is unavailable, data simply follows another path.
We use long-range radio transmitters that operate on free frequencies. Each node can communicate directly with other nodes within a radius of several kilometers, depending on topography and other environmental factors.
The system uses dynamic routing protocols that automatically discover the most efficient paths for messages, constantly adapting to changes in the network as new nodes are added or removed.
Messaging: Communication applications independent of the commercial internet
Emergency Alerts: Notification system for natural disasters and critical situations
Connectivity: Network access in remote locations without traditional infrastructure
The MeshOffGrid network offers unique benefits to individuals and communities.
With no central points of failure, the network continues to function even if some nodes become unavailable. Ideal for emergencies and natural disasters.
Communication free from corporate or government surveillance. Data travels directly between users without centralized intermediaries.
Each new node expands the reach of the network. The community collectively builds a communication infrastructure that grows organically.
Affordable components and open technology make deployment economically viable, at a much lower cost than commercial networks.
Low-power LoRa technology allows nodes to operate on batteries or small solar panels, ideal for remote areas or those with limited infrastructure.
Developers can create applications that operate on the network, from messaging systems to IoT and environmental data collection.
